Waste2Compost: Zero Waste Landfills Initiatives (Article 6: G2G)
Location

Three City Corporations and Ten Municipalities in Bangladesh

Project Goal

The main objective of the project is to reduce the dumped waste by processing all the organic waste on site through a composting plant. The by-products will be compost and black soldier, which have a high demand in the local market as well as the international market. The Projects will also introduce circular business models and innovative technologies, which will create new income opportunities and employment opportunities for local communities. In the longer run, the project will reduce unpleasant odor, harmful gas emission, health hazards and spread of diseases and improve the environment of the respective community.

Project Description

The initiative will be structured into four key components:

1. Establishing a Fully Functional Waste Management Base: Three city corporations and Ten municipalities designated landfill sites will be upgraded to become fully operational hubs for waste recycling, reuse, and reduction. Organic waste will be processed on-site, and reusable materials will be distributed to value chain actors.

2. Strengthening the Waste Value Chain: Employing a circular economy model, the project will engage and train local entrepreneurs to unlock the potential of waste recycling, both as intermediaries and end-users. This approach will foster economic growth and generate employment opportunities.

3. Environmental Restoration: Waste accumulated in and around landfill sites will be systematically removed. The dumping grounds will be rehabilitated in collaboration with local communities, who will be educated on the benefits of reforestation and trained in income generating activities linked to market access.

4. Monitoring and Sale of Carbon Credits: Monitoring is a critical aspect of any carbon offset project. This component will include: establishing a project baseline; developing the Project Design Document (PDD); and conducting annual monitoring of carbon sequestration efforts.

The project's impact

Beyond the reduction and removal of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the project will contribute significantly to broader social, economic, and environmental development:

  • Development of a Sustainable and Replicable Landfill Management Model: The project will establish an efficient and sustainable landfill management system that can be easily replicated in other regions. This model emphasizes best practices in operational efficiency, environmental compliance, and long-term sustainability.

  • Improved Working Conditions and Safety Standards: Targeted training programs will enhance the skills of landfill workers, while improved working conditions and adherence to occupational safety and health standards will ensure a safer, more dignified work environment.

  • Job Creation with a Focus on Gender Balance: The project will generate decent employment opportunities across the waste value chain. Special emphasis will be placed on ensuring gender balance, thereby promoting social inclusion and driving positive social change within local communities.

  • Promotion of Circular Economy and Local Enterprise Engagement: By adopting a circular economy approach, the project will engage local businesses in recycling and reuse initiatives. This will not only reduce waste but also stimulate new business development and entrepreneurship, contributing to local economic growth.

  • Environmental Restoration and Ecosystem Recovery: The project will restore degraded dumping grounds and landfills, leading to improved environmental health. Community-based afforestation and clean-up initiatives will contribute to the recovery of local ecosystems and increased biodiversity.

  • Long-Term Economic Benefits Through Profit Sharing and Carbon: Credit Revenue In the long run, stakeholders will benefit from profit-sharing mechanisms and the anticipated high market value of carbon credits. These financial gains will support further community development and reinforce environmental stewardship.
