Recycle Jar Ecosystem Ltd. (RJE), a pioneer in recycling and circular economy solutions, developed the innovative WasteX App as part of its commitment to sustainable waste management. This cutting-edge digital tool was created under the "Plastic Reduction Initiative in Sundarbans Transboundary International Natural Ecosystem (PRISTINE)" project.
The PRISTINE project operates within the broader framework of the PLEASE Project (Plastic Circular Economy and Environmentally Sustainable Solutions) and is supported by two major international organizations. The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) provides essential technical assistance and operational guidance, while The World Bank contributes financial support and expert insights to maximize the project’s impact. Together, these institutions ensure that PRISTINE aligns with global sustainability and environmental conservation goals.
The WasteX App, first ever in the history that addresses the urgent challenge of plastic pollution in the Sundarbans, one of the world’s most ecologically sensitive and biodiverse regions, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Faced with mounting threats from plastic waste, the Sundarbans required innovative solutions—prompting the development of this app.
By digitizing and optimizing the plastic recycling value chain, the WasteX App serves as a transformative platform that connects waste collectors, traders, and recyclers—streamlining and strengthening plastic waste management processes.
RJE is currently working to scale this innovation across other regions of Bangladesh, with the goal of establishing a sustainable value chain and market linkage for single-use plastics (SUP). This initiative is vital to preventing the widespread contamination of soil, water, and critical ecosystems caused by SUPs, which pose severe threats to the environment, biodiversity, and wildlife.
At present, the WasteX Business Model is being actively practiced by approximately 500 young wastepreneurs around the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world. The current geographical coverage spans five (05) districts and seventeen (17) sub-districts (upazilas), as follows:
01. Satkhira: Shyamnagar, Kaliganj, Assasuni
02. Khulna: Botiaghata, Dakop, Koyra, Paikgasa
03. Bagerhat: Mongla, Rampal, Sarankhola, Morrelganj
04. Pirojpur: Matbaria, Bhandaria, Nesarabad
05. Barguna: Bamna, Barguna Sadar, Patharghata
This initiative is being jointly implemented by RJE and Rupantar, Khulna.
In addition, RJE is closely collaborating with the Bangladesh Forest Department (BFD) to reduce plastic pollution in the Sundarbans by applying the WasteX Business Model.
